#Auto-Pilot: AI-Assisted Cited Writing in Microsoft Word
"True masters create the canvas and the skeleton; then helpers do the rest; then the master finishes the marvel."
Auto-Pilot is an intelligent scientific manuscript drafting assistant available directly inside the Biblion Microsoft Word Add-In.
Grounded in the classical atelier philosophy, Auto-Pilot liberates researchers from the exhausting, mechanical routine of translating outline notes into formal academic prose, looking up reference details, and manually inserting citation brackets.
By taking your rough draft ideas, pairing them with evidence from your Personal Library, and weaving them into cited, publication-ready paragraphs, Auto-Pilot frees your mental energy for high-level creative and conceptual thinking.

#🎨 The Philosophy: The Master, The Canvas, and The Marvel
In classical studios, the master artist never spent days grinding pigments or painting repetitive background foliage. The master drafted the composition (the canvas and skeleton), apprentices filled in the established forms, and the master returned to add the crowning brushstrokes that turned the work into a marvel.
Auto-Pilot applies this principle to biomedical and academic writing:
- The Master Creates the Canvas: You provide the novel scientific idea, core argument, or rough bulleted notes directly in Microsoft Word.
- Relevant Pigments Surface Instantly: Auto-Pilot automatically discovers and ranks up to 5 matching references from your curated Personal Library based on semantic overlap.
- The Helpers Do the Heavy Lifting: Your chosen AI model (Claude 3.5 Sonnet, GPT-4o, Gemini, or Claude 3.5 Haiku) weaves the selected evidence into cohesive academic prose and inserts native Word citation Content Controls at the appropriate positions.
- The Master Finishes the Marvel: You review the cited draft in Word, fine-tune nuances, and give the manuscript your definitive scholarly polish.
#📋 Eligibility & Requirements
To ensure data integrity and host capabilities, Auto-Pilot operates under the following requirements:
- Host Environment: Microsoft Word Add-In (Word Desktop on Windows/macOS or Word on the Web). In standalone browser mode, a banner guides you to open Word.
- Account & License: A signed-in Biblion account with an active Pro Subscription or an active 15-Day Free Trial.
- Personal Library: At least one saved article in your Biblion Personal Library (articles can be saved instantly from PubMed search).
- AI Provider (BYOK): A valid API key for your chosen AI provider:
- OpenRouter (Default provider, recommended model:
anthropic/claude-3.5-sonnet) - OpenAI (e.g.
gpt-4o,gpt-4o-mini) - Anthropic (e.g.
claude-3-5-sonnet-20241022,claude-3-5-haiku-20241022) - Google Gemini (e.g.
gemini-2.5-flash,gemini-2.5-pro)
#🚀 Step-by-Step User Guide
#1. Open the Auto-Pilot Tab
Inside Microsoft Word, open the Biblion taskpane and click the Auto-Pilot tab in the top navigation bar.
#2. Configure Your AI Provider & Key
- When you first access Auto-Pilot (or if no API key is configured), the AI Provider & Model Settings form is presented automatically.
- Select your AI Provider (defaults to OpenRouter).
- Choose a recommended model from the dropdown or type a custom model identifier.
- Paste your provider API key. Click Save Key (or press <kbd>Enter</kbd>).
- Once saved, the configuration form automatically collapses, keeping your taskpane clean and maximizing vertical space for your references and manuscript text.
- To change your provider, model, or key at any time, click the provider pill button in the top header bar to toggle the form.
#3. Select Draft Text or Rough Ideas in Word
Highlight any text passage, rough bullet points, or draft notes in your Word document:
Example Selection: "CRISPR-Cas9 base editing in hematopoietic stem cells. High editing efficiency with lower indel formation compared to Cas9 nuclease double-strand breaks."
- Auto-Pilot instantly analyzes the selection and updates the matching references list in real time.
- If you move your cursor or highlight a different sentence in Word, the references update automatically without requiring manual re-searches.
#4. Inspect Abstracts with 3D Flip Cards
Auto-Pilot presents up to 5 references from your Personal Library ordered by similarity:
- Each card shows the calculated similarity percentage (e.g.,
85% similarity #1), publication year, journal, and author summary. - Read Full Abstracts: Click anywhere on a reference card (or click Read Abstract). The card executes a smooth 3D flip to display the structured abstract, DOI, and publication details.
- If an article's abstract is not yet cached locally, Auto-Pilot fetches the complete abstract on demand from NCBI PubMed.
- Click Close Abstract (or click the card again) to flip back to the summary face.
#5. Check References to Cite
- Click the checkboxes next to the references you wish to synthesize into your text.
- Use Select All or Clear buttons for rapid bulk selection.
- Interacting with reference checkboxes or flip cards automatically collapses the AI configuration panel if it was left open, keeping your focus on the evidence.
#6. Click Generate
With your text highlighted in Word and your references checked, click the primary Generate button:
- Auto-Pilot transmits the draft notes and selected reference abstracts to your configured AI helper.
- The AI synthesizes polished, formal academic prose preserving your original hypothesis and intent.
- In-text citation markers (
[PMID:...]) are translated into native Biblion Word Content Controls placed before punctuation. - Your document's References bibliography section at the end of the manuscript updates automatically in your active citation style (APA, Vancouver, IEEE, Nature, AMA, Harvard, Chicago, etc.).
#🛡️ Built-in Quality & Edge Case Protections
Auto-Pilot includes robust railguards to protect your manuscript from common AI pitfalls:
- Hallucination Stripping: The AI helper is constrained strictly to your checked references. Any hallucinated citation markers not present in your checked list are automatically removed before insertion.
- Guaranteed Attribution: Every reference you checked is guaranteed to appear in the generated prose at the appropriate conceptual juncture.
- In-Flight Selection Drift Protection: If you click into another paragraph or change your Word selection while the AI request is generating, Auto-Pilot verifies the target range and safely aborts replacement to prevent overwriting the wrong text.
- Bibliography Safety Zone: Auto-Pilot prevents accidental execution if your selection is inside the document's
Referencesbibliography section, preventing structural corruption. - Clean Punctuation & Spacing: In-text citation controls are automatically formatted with proper typographical spacing before clause punctuation (
... demonstrated efficacy [1].rather than... efficacy. [1]). - Cross-Provider Key Isolation: API keys are isolated per provider so keys are never leaked across different AI backends.
#💡 Best Practices for Best Results
- Canvas Precision: The clearer your rough notes or bullet points, the more focused the synthesized prose will be. Mention specific experimental models, cell lines, or outcome measures you want highlighted.
- Curate Your Library First: Auto-Pilot draws evidence directly from your Biblion Personal Library. When conducting literature reviews in PubMed search, save key papers to your library with relevant tags and notes.
- Review and Polish: Always read the generated text with your expert eye. Auto-Pilot takes care of 80% of the mechanical drafting and formatting; your 20% creative refinement delivers the final masterpiece.
